Quite often, people just want someone to listen to them. Last thing they want or need is a lecture. The level of ignorance around pensions for example, is sad and where pension funds are concerned. 
Sometimes the advice needed is not regulated advice e.g. benefits advice, so I point people to the other resources that are out there. Otherwise it is plain commonsense which is very easy to overlook when you have just been given some very hard news."
